The Social Network Show welcomes two esteemed guests to the show, Dr. Karen Freberg, Assistant Professor of Strategic Communication at University of Louisville and Dorie Clark, Branding Expert, Author, Marketing Strategy Consultant and adjunct professor of business administration at Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business.
The discussion begins by looking at Dr. Freberg’s research on loneliness as written up in the article titled, The rich get richer: Online and offline social connectivity predicts subjective loneliness. This study looked at university students, loneliness, and social media use. The research answered the following questions: Are students who are lonely offline also lonely online or do we turn into quite different people when we are online? How can the results of this study be used? Is loneliness tied to cyberbullying? If so, how can we help these people? Dr. Freberg suggested reading John Cacioppo’s book on loneliness titled, Loneliness: Human Nature and the Need for Social Connection.
Dr. Freberg shared some interesting information about college-age people, how they feel compelled to share their life experiences online, and how important it is to them to share this information visually on sites such as Instagram. She spends time teaching her students the importance of their online presentation of themselves and how this can later affect employment. She suggests using the following search engines to look up yourself: samepoint and topsy.
Dorie Clark is the next guest on the show and is an expert on how to present yourself online, reinvent yourself professionally, and create your personal brand. She says a personal brand is simply a synonym for your reputation; she explains why it is so important that we care about our reputation.
Ms. Clark explains that one of the best ways to share your ideas with the world is to blog about them. One thing she suggests is that you have your own blog as a starting point. Dorie herself blogs for Forbes, Harvard Business Review, and many other publications. She talks about her ladder approach to blogging, and gives three steps on how to get seen if your a blogger. You will want to listen to the show to hear her ladder strategy to increasing your exposure as a blogger.
Another recommendation for those who want to appear in a professional light, is to create a narrative concerning your new professional identity. Dorie provides many tools on her website to assist you. She also talks about how to promote yourself without sounding too arrogant and how important time management is when using social media to promote yourself and your ideas.
