Radical changes in human communication have posed novel problems since the advent of the Internet. So novel, in fact, that much of the public remains ignorant of the urgent need to update security measures—not only IT security on computers, mobile devices, and the many connected tools of life (the Internet of Things, or IoT)—but state, national and international security as well.
Josh Corman, Beau Woods and Atlantic Council
Joshua Corman and Beau Woods have been leaders in a grassroots movement among information security professionals to move the industry toward more robust safety standards and practices. Both men started working quietly with Atlantic Council’s Cyber Statecraft initiative some months ago. On April 8, 2016, the council announced Mr. Corman’s appointment as Director of the initiative. Mr. Woods will serve as Deputy Director. Their work will be multi-faceted as, in Corman’s words, “Our dependence on connected technology is growing much faster than our ability to secure it, in areas affecting public safety, human life, international security, the global economy, and society.” With a degree in Philosophy, this information technologist looks at information security in the context of human impact, behavior, and meaning.
I am the Cavalry
Corman and his associates searched for the “adults in the room” among U.S. governance and regulatory structures dealing with the intersection of Internet and security and privacy. Their conclusion? “The cavalry isn’t coming, we are it.” Corman, Nick Percoco and others laid the groundwork for iamthecavalry.org as a global organization to address cyber vulnerability in 2013 at BSides Las Vegas, DEF CON and Derbycon. Just a year later the Five Star Automotive Cyber Safety Framework was launched. It addresses the need to secure connected vehicles from vulnerabilities to hacking. More recently, the Hippocratic Oath for Connected Medical Devices was launched in January 2016.
Brent Scowcroft Center on International Security — Cyber Statecraft Initiative
With his appointment as Director of the Cyber Statecraft Initiative of the Brent Scowcroft Center on International Security, Corman leaves private sector info sec employment to devote himself full-time to issues motivating iamthecavalry.org, such as security of public infrastructure. He will direct additional projects described at http://www.atlanticcouncil.org/programs/brent-scowcroft-center/cyber-statecraft.
